AFNIC today deployed its own anycast cloud to increase the robustness of the .fr domain and its quality of service in domain name resolution.
AFNIC has been using the anycast technology for many years now, freeing it from geographical limitations in the location of its critical servers. As geographical coverage widens, the anycast technology improves the DNS service quality with ever shorter response times and greater reliability:
more servers mean better resistance to saturation attacks.
While maintaining a worldwide coverage with almost 60 nodes, AFNIC has set up new DNS servers at several locations in France and around Europe, notably in Lyon which is ideally located from the networking point of view, being close to both Switzerland and Italy.
So since 11.00 am CET on December 4th, 2009, AFNIC has been running an anycast cloud on the Lyon’s IXP infrastructures of Rézopole/Lyonix.
The deployment up of this new anycast cloud run entirely by AFNIC fulfills a double objective: firstly, mastering the technology, in order to open new sites in addition to those already being managed by its providers; and secondly, increasing the density of DNS infrastructures as close as possible to the French users.
This cloud – which also covers the Reunion Island – will soon be covering other cities, such as Brussels and Paris

About Afnic
Afnic is the acronym for Association Française pour le Nommage Internet en Coopération, the French Network Information Centre. The registry has been appointed by the French government to manage domain names under the .fr Top Level Domain. Afnic also manages the .re (Reunion Island), .pm (Saint-Pierre and Miquelon), .tf (French Southern and Antarctic Territories), .wf (Wallis and Futuna) and .yt (Mayotte) French Overseas TLDs.
In addition to managing French TLDs, Afnic’s role is part of a wider public interest mission, which is to contribute on a daily basis, thanks to the efforts of its teams and its members, to a secure and stable internet, open to innovation and in which the French internet community plays a leading role. As part of that mission, Afnic, a non-profit organization, has committed to devoting 11% of its Revenues from managing .fr Top Level Domain to actions of general interest, in particular by transferring €1.3 million each year to the Afnic Foundation for Digital Solidarity.
Afnic is also the back-end registry for the companies as well as local and regional authorities that have chosen to have their own TLD, such as .paris, .bzh, .alsace, .corsica, .mma, .ovh, .leclerc and .sncf.
Established in 1997 and based in Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines, Afnic currently has nearly 90 employees.
