The winners 2019 of the Afnic Foundation for Digital Solidarity

The Afnic Foundation announced today, at its annual Rencontres des Solidarités Numériques (‘Digital Solidarity Meetings’) event, that it has selected 59 winners who will receive a total of €1.1 million in funding for their respective projects designed to make digital technology accessible to all.

Created in 2015 by Afnic, from which it receives 90% of the profits generated by the .fr Top Level Domain, the Afnic Foundation has increased the number of winners and the budget allocated to their respective projects every year since, contributing €2.8 million to 117 projects between 2015 and 2018 alone.

“2019 has been an exceptional year for our Foundation, which will have supported a record number of 59 winners. This shows just how dynamic these projects designed to make the Internet more inclusive and accessible to all really are”, explains Philippe Distler, President of the Afnic Foundation.

59 winners have been chosen from among the 390 applications received this year, including the following:

  • Projects designed to promote equal access to the digital sphere throughout the country, such as the Wagon numérique (‘Digital Wagon’) – a project supported by the Chemin de Fer de la Vallée de l’Eure association to restore a 1905 wagon and turn it into a mobile unit for assisting with administrative procedures and access rights.
  • Environmental projects, such as ‘HopHopFood’ – an app designed to fight food waste by enabling individuals to gift food to others.
  • Health projects, such as the Prévention du VIH par Voie Numérique (‘Digital HIV Prevention’) project led by Aides Centre-Val de Loire, which aims to enhance this initiative, launched in 2018, with digital consultations, an app and digital interviews.
  • Innovative projects, such as Eldorado – a small humanoid robot programmed using artificial intelligence to help children in difficulty to learn to read, an idea by the Centre de Promotion du Livre de Jeunesse.

About Afnic

Afnic is the acronym for Association Française pour le Nommage Internet en Coopération, the French Network Information Centre. The registry has been appointed by the French government to manage domain names under the .fr Top Level Domain. Afnic also manages the .re (Reunion Island), .pm (Saint-Pierre and Miquelon), .tf (French Southern and Antarctic Territories), .wf (Wallis and Futuna) and .yt (Mayotte) French Overseas TLDs.

In addition to managing French TLDs, Afnic’s role is part of a wider public interest mission, which is to contribute on a daily basis, thanks to the efforts of its teams and its members, to a secure and stable internet, open to innovation and in which the French internet community plays a leading role. As part of that mission, Afnic, a non-profit organization, has committed to devoting 11% of its Revenues from managing .fr Top Level Domain to actions of general interest, in particular by transferring €1.3 million each year to the Afnic Foundation for Digital Solidarity.
Afnic is also the back-end registry for the companies as well as local and regional authorities that have chosen to have their own TLD, such as .paris, .bzh, .alsace, .corsica, .mma, .ovh, .leclerc and .sncf.

Established in 1997 and based in Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines, Afnic currently has nearly 90 employees.
